Beginners' Workshop

If you'd like to have a go on the potter's wheel or fancy getting creative with some

hand-building then our Beginners' workshop is perfect for you!

It's a relaxed, one-off session of two hours and fifteen minutes, in which we will guide you in making a hand-built vessel, usually a mug, jug, vase, dish or bowl using the slab-rolling technique.

One of our experienced tutors will show you how to prepare your clay, shape and assemble your piece and then decorate it using impression-making stamps and or underglaze paints.

Once you have assembled your hand-built piece, you will spend some time getting to grips with throwing a pot on the wheel.

Stepping up to the potter's wheel is an exciting hands-on adventure. It's a wonderful sensory experience where focus meets creativity.

Learning to throw a pot is a playful and immersive experience, it's not about perfection, but about the process of feeling the clay respond to your hands and experiencing the joy of creating something from scratch.

You will be guided through the stages of throwing - the centring, the coning up and down, opening up and pulling up your walls. We encourage you to embrace the "wonkiness" and just enjoy the process!
